8vo. Contemporary or Slightly later full panelled calf, ruled and decorated in gilt. Rebacked
Collates as follows: Aeneid TP, 16 numbered leaves of the Bucolics, Georgics TP, 40 numbered leaves of the Georgics, 176 numbered leaves of the Aeneid - and thus complete apart from the title page for the Bucolics.
A RARE C16TH Continental Edition of Virgil - OCLC locates only two copies, at Princeton and in Virginia.
The works of Publius Vergilius Maro - later known as Virgilus, in English as Virgil, 70BCE-19BCE - The Bucolics, (now know as the Ecologues), Georgics, and Aeneid are probably the best known epics of the Roman period - indeed the Aeneid, an epic in the heroic style (i.e., in twelve books), was adopted as the National Epic of the Roman Empire itself.
Binding is rubbed and marked, corners bumped with loss, wear to extremities. Later, but not recent reback, with original spine laid down. Hinges reinforced with cloth, which combined with the rebacking, have ensured the binding remains tight. Marking to page edges.
Provenance: Richard Jackson, F.R.H.S. and Vice President of the Dante Society, with his bookplate to FEP.
Internally sporadically marked, odd foxing spot. Some damp staining and ink marking, probably to about twenty leaves in total. Small tear and old repair to gutter of leaf F, affecting a few words of text but with no loss. Some contemporary pen anotation, much of it faded into the background!
A wide margined copy.
A significant antiquarian tome, and early example of Fezandat printing - with no others available for sale on the internet!!!
