JOHN OLGILBY (1600-1676) Writer, printer, map maker and originally a dancing-master of very high repute, 'one of the best masters in the profession, and as such was selected to dance in the Duke of Buckingham's great masque in which by an unlucky step' he sprained his leg 'in cutting a caper, which was much the practice in dancing, in the time of Charles I. 'To this accident which gave him a limp for the rest of his life, 'we owe many Royal Folios.'
Thence Ogilby took to study 'at an age when men usually think of leaving off all literary pursuits; and quickly made astonishing progress.' One of his earliest works was the translation of Virgil into heroic verse, 'his mastery over the heroic couplet is creditable; his version is sufficiently close to the words of Virgil - much more so than Dryden's - and though he shows no trace of poetical feeling, he writes in fair commonplace English.' His translation of Virgil is said to have brought him 'a considerable sum of money.' And its success encouraged Ogilby to learn Greek, and to translate Homer's Iliad (1660) and Odyssey (1665) into English.
Ogilby's success as a publisher was due in no small part to his establishment in 1664 of a lottery under Royal patronage, in which all the prizes were books of his own editing and printing or publishing. The plague and the great fire of London seriously interfered with the working of this scheme, and he subsequently opened a new 'standing lottery.'
Ogilby printed many splendid books, his Virgil, published in 1649, was handsomely printed and the first which gave the entire works in English.
