EXCEEDINGLY RARE COMMENTARY ON THE TEN COMMANDMENTS BY FRANCISCUS DE MAYRONIS, PRINTED BY THE FAMOUS BADIUS ASCENSIUS! WITH AN ADDITIONAL 15 PAGES OF CONTEMPORARY MANUSCRIPT NOTES IN REAR!

UNHEARD OF, PROFOUNDLY RARE FIRST-EDITION!

1519 [1ST-ED] "DECALOGI EXPLANATIO" [AN EXPOSITION ON THE TEN COMMANDMENTS] By Franciscus De Mayronis. Paris: J. Badius Ascensius, 1519. First Edition. Quarto (4vo) measuring 8" x 5 ¾" (20 x 14 cm). Bound in 1800s Half Calf Leather with marbled boards! Gilt Title, Date, and 5 raised bands on spine! With 160 printed pages consisting of 78 numbered leaves followed by 2 unnumbered leaves. Printed in Gothic Type! (100% COMPLETE!) Badius's printer's device on Title Page representing an Early Printing Press; woodcut initials. Manuscript marginalia in a contemporary 16th-century hand and 15 manuscript pages bound at the end in the same hand; two early 16th-century ownership entries on title: "fr. Marinus Ruffi" and "fr. Robertus Vacarrius"; and a somewhat later ownership entry of the Minorite monastery of Caen; some faint dampstains (visible in photos). Additional 15 page manuscript notes at rear match the handwriting of "Fr. Marinus Ruffi".

VERY RARE FIRST EDITION of the explication of the Ten Commandments by Francis of Meyronnes, the great 14th-century Franciscan scholar (ca. 1285-1328), best known for his influential commentaries on Aristotle. The text was edited and printed by the celebrated scholar printer Jodocus Badius Ascensius, who set up his press in Paris in 1503, becoming the first scholar printer in France worthy of the name; as his trademark he adopted an image of a printing press manned by a pressman and various other attendants (see photos below). The added 15 manuscript pages bound at the end are in a strictly contemporary 16th-century scholarly hand, and consist of a commentary on the printed text. The hand appears to be identical with that of "Marinus Ruffi," the early owner of this copy who signed the title-page (see photos below).

This book is extremely rare: only the Yale University copy is located in America (besides the present). REFERENCES: Renouard, Badius, vol. III, 78-9; Moreau, Inventaire chronologique des éditions parisiennes du XVIe siècle, vol. II, no. 2419.
