Starring: Leslie Howard, Wendy Hiller, Wilfrid Lawson
Upper class phoneticist and speech coach Henry Higgins (Leslie Howard) meets street flower seller Eliza Doolittle (Wendy Hiller) and Sanskrit scholar Colonel Pickering (Scott Sunderland) while sheltering from the rain on the steps of St Paul's Covent Garden. Disgusted with Eliza's abysmal English, he boasts that he could teach her to speak like a duchess in six months. The following morning, she arrives and offers to pay for elocution lessons so she can work at a florist shop. Pickering is intrigued and bets the costs of Eliza's tutoring that Higgins cannot pass her off as a duchess at a ball. Eliza's father, Mr Doolittle (Wilfrid Lawson), shows up to extort £5 from Higgins, who is so amused he offers Doolittle £10.
After some work, Higgins takes Eliza to visit his mother Mrs Higgins (Marie Lohr) to gauge Eliza's progress. His pupil causes comic consternation by delivering an account of a relative's death in Received Pronunciation that is still entirely Cockney in phraseology. There she also meets Freddy Eynsford-Hill (David Tree), a young upper-middle-class man who becomes enamored with her.
After more work and a makeover, Higgins and Pickering take her to a reception at the Transylvanian embassy, where they meet an over-confident Hungarian former pupil of Higgins', Count Aristid Karpathy (Esme Percy). Now a speech coach in his own right, Karpathy becomes suspicious of Eliza. Just when it appears Karpathy is about to reveal Eliza as an impostor, he very publicly concludes that Eliza speaks English too well to be an English duchess and is in fact a Hungarian princess...
