The handle/hilt is solid Brass and only very dark due to the age patina. I could have it cleaned but felt this should be the choice of the buyer and so have left it as it was found. The eaglehead is finely modeled and very detailed. The obverse langet has the Federal Eagle holding the olive branch in one talon and the sheaf of arrows in the other, the reverse is plain. The grip is fancy carved bone. A couple of age lines as pictured but the handle grip is totally intact with no missing parts. The single-edged blade is in basically decent condition for age with some evidence of pitting near the tip as shown. It has some simple etched designs with an overlay of gold of floral and also scroll shield or??? Has a maker named under the langet but I cannot make it out....a little cleaning should do the trick or if someone can disassemble it I'm sure it will be evident. Probably had a loop style handguard as was on most of these period pcs. but now long gone and the slot for it is under the Eagles Beak so would be easy enough to restore since there are no broken parts or sections. Wonderful historical item in very acceptable collector condition.
Measures approx. 33" long and 4.5 at the crossguard.
