WESTERN STORIES
"The Luck of Roaring Camp"
"The Outcasts of Poker Flat"
Bret Harte was responsible for introducing the life in a Gold Rush Camp to the literary World. These camps could be lawless and quite uncivilized, so the challenge was writing about them, in a way, that was accurate and appealing to the public, yet socially acceptable. Thats where the romance comes in! The combination of the two sold magazines...and people still love his stories.
