AVIATION!
HERO OF THE SKY!
During the first World War the Aviator became a new sort of popular hero!
They appeared in novels, pulp fiction, magazines, and movies, such as the 1927 film :WINGS"
In the 1920's and 30's the flyer became the hero of comic pages.
TAILSPIN TOMMY
was one of the earliest aviation strips, landing in comic sections before Scorchy Smith, Skyroads and Smilin'Jack.
Bell Syndicate put writer Glenn Chaffin and Cartoonist Hal Forrest together, and we can all be thankful!
Tailspin Tommy was born, starting in four papers in 1928, and took off!!!
Readers fell for TommyTomkins, his sidekick Skeeter, and Betty Lou Barns, a capable aviator who had "more nerve" than most men.
In the 1930's the strip ran daily, and eventually on Sundays.
In 1934, Tailspin Tommy was among the strips reprinted in the
first modern comic book,
Famous Funnies, published by Max Gaines at Eastern Color Printing.
