The de Havilland DH 106 Comet was the world's first commercial jet airliner to reach production.[N 2] Developed and manufactured by de Havilland,
it first flew in 1949 and was a landmark in aeronautical design. After
introduction into commercial service, the initial Comet versions
suffered from catastrophic metal fatigue, which caused two well-publicised accidents.
The Comet had to be withdrawn with the redesigned Comet 4
series subsequently enjoying a long and productive career of over
30 years, although sales never fully recovered. Examples of a
specialised reconnaissance variant of the Hawker Siddeley Nimrod,
the military derivative of the Comet airliner, are still in service and
are expected to be retired in March 2011, over 60 years after the
Comet's first flight.
