Not a tree, but a giant fast growing herb, this is one of the delicious fruits common to the tropics, but such a one as this is rare indeed in the market. In spite of fast growth and large fruit, the ultimate size of this tree is only 12-15ft. Smaller than most papaya trees and stockier.
This is a red fleshed melon averaging 5 to 8 pounds in an oval melon shape with almost no neck. It is superior in taste with mild sweet flavor and almost none of the musky odor often associated with papaya. Brix is 13%. Seeds are as easily removed from the cavity as from a cantalope. The seeds have a peppery taste and are great used in salads.
