This Sugar Pie pumpkin variety is excellent for pies and "Pumpkin Pie" has long been a favorite New England specialty. Small Sugar Pie Pumpkin has small round fruits with deep ribbed skin, flesh is deep orange-yellow, fine grained and sweet.

Plant Sugar Pie pumpkin seed outdoors in late spring when ground is warm and all danger of frost is past. Make a group of 4 to 6 seeds placed in a ring about 2 inches across; cover with 1/2 inch of fine soil, well pressed down. Each ring of pumpkin seeds is called a hill and hills should be spaced 6 to 10 feet apart each way. When pumpkin plants are 2 to 3 inches tall, thin leaving the 3 strongest plants in each hill. Sugar Pie pumpkin seeds germinates in 7 to 14 days depending on soil and weather conditions. Sugar Pie Pumpkins may also be planted in rows 6 to 10 feet apart, spacing plants 2 to 3 feet apart in the row. Pumpkins may also be planted in among the corn. Cut mature Sugar Pie pumpkins from the vines with pruning shears, leaving 3 inches of the stem.
