(Nepeta cataria) Perennial, medicinal herb. Height to 1.5m. Pale green leaves with light purple flowers. Attracts bees to the garden, or used as insect repellent, to repel fleas, ants & rodents. Dried leaves & flowers also used to stuff cloth mice for cats to play with.
Catnip is a perennial herb and member of the Mint family Labiatae that is well known for its ability to get cat's high. It is native to Europe & Asia, however has become naturalised in America & Canada after being introduced. There are approximately 250 species of Catnip, and this figure doesn't include hybrid species. Some of the more readily available ones are:
Growing tips: Will tolerate poor soils, but grows best in well drained, sandy loam. Tolerates temperatures to -35. Cut back hard after flowing.
