Abelmoschus manihot
The
large, up to 15 cm (6 inches) hibiscus-like flowers are a brilliant lemon with deep purple
centers borne n long pedicels at the apex of the plant. Flowers are produced in the warmer
months. The flowers are pollinated by insects. Petals can be added to salads or cooked.
While the large yellow flowers are very ornamental, the importance of this
plant is that it is one of the world's most nutritious leafy vegetables because of its
high protein content. The leaves are tender and sweet and can be served raw or steamed
(leaf for life).

Abelmoschus
manihot can be grown as an ornamental.
This plant, Abelmoschus manihot, is a very important food crop in Fiji. The plant
grows to at least 10 ft. and will develop branches and become woody with age. The leaves
are used in the same way collards are. They are also mild enough for salad and have the
same "mucilaginous" as okra, to which it is related. Use it's leaves in salad,
and as wrappers for food, "tortilla style".
In Japanese, this plant is known as
tororo
aoi and is used to make neri, a starchy substance used in making Washi.

Edible Hibiscus, Abelmoschus manihot, is grown for its leaves and for its large
flowers. Even the roots can be used.
A
large ornamental okra with dinner-plate-sized, sulfur yellow flowers with dark eyes.
Each flower lasts only a day—unfolding slowly in the morning and closing gradually in
the evening—but the abundance of flowers open on any one day conceals their short
life span. |
Edible Hibiscus is a true multipurpose plant with edible leaves, flowers, seedpods and
mature seeds. It is an annual and is very heat tolerant and relatively free from pests.
By carefully picking lower leaves it is possible to get a good crop of leaves and of
seedpods from the same plants.
The seeds are toasted, ground and used as a
substitute for coffee.

Edible Hibiscus flowers are a lovely pale yellow with a dark purple/maroon
center.
Tropical Hibiscus
Abelmoschus Manihot can be grown as an annual in zones colder than 8b. Most likely, it is
a perennial Hibiscus in warmer zones. We grow this plant (abelmoschus manihot) in our
vegetable garden here in Hawaii.
Whichever zone
you live in, it is a lovely plant to add to your garden.
This plant is suitable for pot culture. |

Combined
Discounts Won Auctions
For 2-3 winning auctions, the combined discount is 10% of the total Shipping and Handling
charges. For 4-7 winning auctions, the combined discount is 20% of the total Shipping and
Handling charges. For 7+ winning auctions, the combined discount is 30% of the total
Shipping and Handling charges.

As each order is packed and prepared separately you will pay the quoted S/H charges
individually per item. If you buy the same species in that item it does calculate out the
discount (i.e.: additional item $3.61). My stores' combined shipping is built in for same
items rather than a varied selection. Includes postage, USDA certification and inspection,
proper packing and delivery to Airport for prompt delivery. I can’t really change any
of these. If you want one of this and one of that, it gets hard to discount much as each
different species requires it's own prep & packing, then at USDA each has to be
unwrapped and inspected then repacked. USDA requires me to clean and prepare every last
piece before we drive them to the Inspection Station on the other side of the island. It
takes my wife and I, a day to pack items and get ready to ship. The whole next day we
drive around the island and get inspected (2-3 hours), then drive to the Airport Post
Office to drop off. It takes the same work with the same type item if you can understand.
