Plants grown from seed will take 4-6 years
to produce flowers and fruit. Flowers are very showy.
Acca sellowiana do best in full sun to
light shade with a well drained soil mix. A soil mix that consists
of 2 parts peat moss to 2 parts loam to 1 part coarse sand. The
plants are well watered and allowed to dry slightly before watering
again. Fertilize them monthly with a balanced fertilizer. Watering
of these plants is very critical; too much water will cause a lot of
growth but at the expense of flower production. During the winter
months, water is restricted to only enough to keep the leaves from
dropping or shriveling.
Acca sellowiana is propagated by cutting,
layers and from seed. Our plants started from seed. Seedlings should
be kept in a shady area until they are at least 24 inches tall. They
can be then transplanted into larger containers.

The fruit usually is eaten by cutting it in
half, then scooping out the pulp with a spoon. The fruit has a juicy
sweet seed pulp and slightly gritty flesh nearer the skin. The flavor is
aromatic and sweet.
A Feijoa may be used as an interesting addition to a fruit smoothie, and may
be used to make Feijoa wine or cider and feijoa infused vodka. It also is
possible to buy Feijoa yogurt, fruit drinks, jam, ice-cream, and such in New
Zealand. The Feijoa also may be cooked and used in dishes where one would
use stewed fruit. It is a popular ingredient in chutney.

The fruit, maturing in
autumn, is green, ellipsoid, and about the size of a chicken egg. It has a
sweet, aromatic flavor. The flesh is juicy and is divided into a clear
gelatinous seed pulp and a firmer, slightly gritty, opaque flesh nearer the
skin. The fruit drops when ripe and at its fullest flavor, but may be picked
from the tree prior to the drop to prevent bruising. The fruit pulp resembles the closely related guava, having a gritty texture.
The Feijoa pulp is used in some natural cosmetic products as an exfoliant.
Feijoa fruit has a distinctive smell. The aroma is due to the ester methyl
benzoate and related compounds that exist in the fruit.
Pineapple Guava is well
adapted to sub tropical dry areas and can withstand a few degrees of frost.
Plants in nature will reach up to 18 feet (5.5 m) tall. Leaves are
elliptic-oblong to 3 inches (7.6 cm) long, green above and white-wooly
beneath. Bark is light reddish brown at first, turning a darker reddish
brown and peeling as the plants age. Plants are grown for their edible fruit
with a guava-like flavor. Moderately tolerant of salt spray and so is useful
in warm seaside gardens. The plant is relatively easy to grow and makes an
outstanding container plant, hardy in the landscape in USDA zones 9-10.
|
|
Some grafted cultivars of Feijoa are self-fertile. Most are not, and require
a pollinator. Seedlings may or may
not be self fertile. In New Zealand, the pollinators of this plant are bees, bumblebees, or
medium-sized birds. These birds feed on the sweet, fleshy petals of the Feijoa flower. In California, robins, mockingbirds, hummingbirds, starlings, scrub jays,
towhees, and honeybees also feast on the petals and are presumed to be
assisting with pollination. This shrub has very few insect pests.
|
Fruit maturity is not
always apparent visually as the fruits remain the same shade of green until
they are over-mature or rotting. One usually may sense ripeness, however, by
giving the fruit a soft squeeze; a ripe Feijoa will give somewhat like a
just-ripe banana. Generally, the fruit is at its optimum ripeness the day it
drops from the tree. While still hanging it may well prove bitter, however,
once fallen, fruit very quickly becomes over-ripe, so a daily collection of
fallen fruit is advisable during the season. The pink to white flower petals have a delightful
flavor, being crisp, moist, and fleshy. They regularly are consumed by
birds.

Combined
Discounts Won Auctions
For 2-3 winning auctions, the combined discount is 10% of the total Shipping and Handling
charges. For 4-7 winning auctions, the combined discount is 20% of the total Shipping and
Handling charges. For 7+ winning auctions, the combined discount is 30% of the total
Shipping and Handling charges.
As each order is packed and prepared separately you will pay the quoted S/H charges
individually per item. If you buy the same species in that item it does calculate out the
discount (i.e.: additional item $3.61). My stores' combined shipping is built in for same
items rather than a varied selection. Includes postage, USDA certification and inspection,
proper packing and delivery to Airport for prompt delivery. I cant really change any
of these. If you want one of this and one of that, it gets hard to discount much as each
different species requires it's own prep & packing, then at USDA each has to be
unwrapped and inspected then repacked. USDA requires me to clean and prepare every last
piece before we drive them to the Inspection Station on the other side of the island. It
takes my wife and I, a day to pack items and get ready to ship. The whole next day we
drive around the island and get inspected (2-3 hours), then drive to the Airport Post
Office to drop off. It takes the same work with the same type item if you can understand.
