~Travelers Palm~ Ravenala madagascariensis     This palm-like tree needs rich, moist, well drained soil and a sunny spot in a hot     climate. Traveler's palm is not a true palm (family Arecaceae) but a member of the     bird-of-paradise family. Ravenala madagascariensis is an interesting     monocotyledoneous tree with a palm like stem that can grow up to 40'. Ravenala     madagascariensis is the sole member of its genus. This plant is widely cultivated for its     distinctive habit and foliage in tropical and subtropical regions.

The Travelers Palm has paddle-shaped leaves which are lined symmetrically on a plane. This symmetrical appearance     gives a fan-like appearance to the Travelers Palm. The Travelers Palm has a very unique trunk which emerges as it matures. During the beginning years the trunk of the Travelers Palm is underneath the ground. As the Travelers palm grows it loses its     fan-like leaves and reveals a brown rigid trunk. Ravenala madagascariensis has a rhizome, of the same type as others of the same family, generating new  stems every year. The color of the Travelers Palm varies from the tip of the leaves, which is green, to the end of the leaf stem which is yellow.  The leaves are huge, looking like banana tree's leaves. The petioles are disposed as a fan, and between them there's a space, where fresh water  is stored. When it rains, the water collects in those spaces, filling them with water. The inflorescence resembles the one of Heliconia, but huge and green. Inflorescence     and flowers aren't really visually important, but attract birds. When the fruits ripen, lots of neon blue seeds inside.

USDA requires us to clean and  prepare every last piece before we drive them to the Inspection Station on the other side of the island. This requirement takes my wife and I, 2-3 days to pack items and get ready to ship. The whole next day we drive  around the island and get inspected (2-3 hours), then drive to the Airport Post Office to drop off. It takes the same work with the same type item if  you can understand.
