This coverlet has five colors:  Navy blue, medium blue, red, white, and gold on the border.  Double hand woven wool and cotton material - seamed in the middle - typical of the era of weaving. 

Pattern:  Roses and snowflakes

Measures:  90" x 78.5" and 3" fringes

Signed:  Charles Young, Mechanicksburg (which is Mechanicsburg), Pennsylvania 1838 - signed in two corners.

Back in this time period:  The men were the weavers!

AGE:  173 years old

This coverlet was kept in an old trunk ~ it does not appear to have been used ~ comments from an appraiser.

Condition:  Extremely good Antique and very rare ~ two dirt marks as shown in photo measures 2.5" x 2" ~ very minor fading on edge.  I have not detected any flaws, but will double check and note if any are found.

Handwoven Jacquard bed coverlets were made between the 1830s and the 1860s, mostly in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana.  The signed examples, which record the name of the weaver, the name of the client, and the date and the place where woven, are the most coveted. Herr suggests augmenting a collection with weavers' handwritten manuscripts documenting patterns.  Rare, they have been known to bring $9,000 to $20,000.
