This is Clarke's autobiography and memoirs, although written by him in the third person, and published shortly after his death in 1832. This copy is believed to be the first issue, and dated 1833. In brown leather covered boards and spine, with title label on spine. Label is fully present, although the spine covering beneath the label is absent.The label states, "Life of Clarke, Vol. I."  Paper spine covering has protected the folio edges. The books boards are square and flat, with corners a little turned in. The bottom edge and the corners are moderately rubbed. The rear hinge is cracking, front hinge and binding are good. No loose or loosening pages found. Pages seem firm and tight. There are a few small marks and stains on the endpapers, including a faint penciled ledger of book purchases, with this book being the last entry.

There is a beautifully rendered frontispiece portrait of Clarke. This has a little tanning at edges. Clarke's signature appears below, bolder and darker than the artist signature, and appearing to be genuine, but most likely a facsimile. The title page has some spotting, as shown. This is far heavier than elsewhere in the book. The majority of pages in this copy are slightly spotted near an edge, some pages with multiple spots or heavier spotting, a few pages with fingerprints that have darkened or general moderately dense spotting. Where not spotted the pages are a creamy white to off-white with dark black type and quite legible. 178 pages.
