Includes a number of clear, striking photographs of political figures of the late 1800's, including Chester Arthur and William McKinley. Pages are slightly aged, binding is intact, front endpapers are torn.

Fair. No Jacket  Life story briefly told of Blaine, giving an interesting and entertaining account of political campaigning and machinations in the United States immediately after the Civil War through the Cleveland administration. Blaine was nominated three times for the Presidencey, and the conventions are reviewed and explained in this semi-contemporaneous account. Stated "profusely illustrated" on title page, and these illustrations make up about a third of this brief book, and are full page black and white photographic plates. Dark red covers are aged and darkened. Ink decoration has faded from the embossed covers for the most part, but period illustrations still are remarkable: oak leaves, shields, the capitol rotunda and other images that recall the era that saw the birth of American patriotism. Pages are clean, not aged, with one torn page and torn front endpaper. Interesting discussion of Mugwumps, Greenbacks, and other dissident groups in an era that was shot full of them. Covers Blaine's relationship with President Lincoln, as well. An important primary source. Apparent first printing.
