Belonging to the race of giants, and daughter of Gymir Aurboda, Gerd was the goddess of light, the path, leaving a trail of sparks, and as she raised her arms, she radiated a brilliant light on the sky, land and seas (some authors interpret this light as the aurora borealis).

Freyr, seeing her fall madly in love, and to demand her in marriage, Skirnir sent his aide, as a messenger, he offered the apples of youth and the magic ring Draupnir.
