Balalaika, vintage Russian string instrument.  This one has obviously had a career as a functioning musical instrument, not just something to look at and talk about.  There is a paper with Russian writing that can be seen inside the hole.  I don't know when this was made, but I'm guessing before 1980.  I don't play this, nor am I an expert in these types of instruments.  I purchased this from Russia, and it seems to be in pretty good shape.  It has a nice sound and no obvious damage, other than a six inch or so crack on the right side of the instrument.  This extends from the base almost to the height of the hole.  This never bothered me, but I wanted to mention it.  You should be able to see in the pictures.  The instrument is about 26.5 inches tall and 15.5 inches wide at the base.
