Kyung Ok Kim

Sculptress Kim Kyung-Ok is one of the few women artists in Korea. The confucianist roots of the traditional culture still maintain a strong hold on modern Korean Society. Thus it is very difficult for a married woman to pursue a career; social circumstances are not yet ripe to positively accommodate the social and creative activity of women. Female artists in Korea find themselves subject to this harsh reality and must exert more effort than their counterparts in Wester  Europe and North America. In fact, there are many aspiring woman artists in Korea but very few are able to establish themselves as artists. However, the case of Kim Kyung-Ok has proven to be quite exceptional. Although a housewife and a mother, she has cultivated her world of art with such perseverance that during recent years she has participated in many group exhibitions and mounted a one woman show.

Unlike her fellow artists, she is not so sensitive to the tendencies of the time but seeks to find her artistic motifs from the simplicity of ordinary life. This trend has been recurrent in recent years. She has been totally absorbed in creating her own plastic idioms based on her temperament and sensitivity, and trying to translate them into reality.

It seems natural for her to choose her motifs from the world of children. The models she uses are, of course, her own children. But she is not an ordinary mother observing her children with affection. In her art, she strives to catch the eternal and fundamental meaning in the expressions of children and their world and transform it into artistic form.

A good contrast to the works exhibited in her first show is provided by a series of works entitled "Peace". Through this recurrent theme she reveals a deepened religious experience in her pursuit of eternity. The artist herself emphasizes this point. The impact of these works may be summed up by saying that the artist herself confesses her faith through her works; her works reveal the artistic affection of a woman who deeply loves life. The ellipsis of simplified form and the ascending, images indicate the fact that she has deepened, her theme as well as visualized her lofty faith. These are hopeful signs that suggest the future direction as well as maturity of the artist.
