Antique Beer Saltglazed Stein-Regensburg Smoking c.1870

Description: This type of very old German beer steins is traditionally called "Regensburg" type even though the majority of them were produced in Westerwald region. These steins are different from the very traditional Westerwald beer vessels - they did not use cobalt-based glaze so the steins keep natural clay color. In Germany they call them "Model" steins referring to the method of manufacturing. These steins were press-molded to a wooden form, they were turned afterwards to make the insides round, then they were fired and the salt was applied to create the the very solid surface. The stein is circa 1870s, the relief decorations show 4 panel with people drinking beer and smoking pipes. The lid is pewter with porcelain inlay hand-painted over transfer outline. It shows 4 seasons theme - 4 scenes from Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring. The stejn has a chip on front. The inlay is cracked. No other damage. 6.5" tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.5L capacity.
