Antique Faience Beer Stein Schrezheim Ludwig I c.1830s

Description: Presented is an early German beer stein made around late 1830s - early 1840s. The stein was made in the factory of Schrezheim - one of the largest faience factory in Germany. The stein is made from traditional Schrezheim red clay and glazed with yellow tin glaze. It was then painted by one of the factory decorators. This type of decorations was called "cold paint" because the paint was not fired. This technique was almost exclusive to Schrezheim factory - they found a red and gold paints that were very sturdy and stayed on the glaze without firing. But of course it was not that sturdy to withstand almost 200 years - usually this type of decorations wears extensively over the years. The most common Schrezhein "cold-painted" steins were blue glazed - this blue steins with red paintings became a signature Schrezheim ceramics.

This particular stein is somewhat unusual - the yellow glaze is very rare for this type. Also, instead of usual floral decor the stein is painted with something like a crown. It turns out to be a Royal Bavarian Crown - the small bronze medallion on the top of the lid shows a portrait of Ludwig I - the Bavarian King from 1825 to 1848. I don't know what the connection is but the stein is dedicated to the Royal Bavarian House. The massive and impressive pewter mountings consist of pewter lid, lip ring and foot ring. Schrezheim was very famous in late 1700s to early 1800s for it's faience work and also for the best quality pewter lids. The lid is highly decorated and topped with a thumblift featuring kissing doves. On top of the lid there is a bronze medallion with a portrait of Ludwig I. The condition is simply excellent - a very rare thing for a faience piece that old. There is no lines or body chips. The cold paint is partially worn out but the wear is not significant. There are several glaze chips on the handle, but that's it - no other damage or issues. The stein is 10" tall to the top of the thumblift, 1L capacity.
