Antique German Beer Stein Donau-Main Kanal c.1860s Description: This very interesting old German stein was made in 1860. It is actually quite rare for this period when old-style faience and saltglazed stoneware was still manufactured. But this is an example of new type industrial stoneware that was ready to take over the old hand-made production. I am not sure who made this piece - in my understanding only Villeroy and Boch were producing something similar in that time period. I know my dating is quite accurate - the pewter is the best indication of the age. The body of the stein shows the Coat-of-Arms of the city of Wuerzburg. The lid is more interesting - it shows the so-called Erlanger Monument, the large sculpture dedicated to Donau-Main Kanal build by Ludwig I King of Bavaria in 1846. It was build in 1864, 18 years after the Channel was finished. The monument was build in Erlangen - just 50 miles from Wuerzburg. I'm not eactly sure what connects Wuerzburg and the monument in Erlangen. But there definitely is a connection, or the building of the monument was such a big event in Bavaria that this special lid was ordered to commemorate it. The stein is in near perfect condition. There is a tiny repair to the pewter finial and a pin-head bubble on the body of the stein (a natural condition, not a damage). Those are the only issues, the rest is flawless.
