Doulton Lambeth Silicon Ware "Copper" Bowl Vase c.1890s

Description: Presented is a very interesting and beautiful stoneware two-handled bowl/vase made by Doulton Lambeth - the most famous British stoneware manufacturer, the British equivalent of Mettlach.

In mid-1800s Henry Doulton was at the forefront of domestic and industrial stoneware products. He became Britains leading manufacturer and a major influence and producer of artistic pottery and commemorative, ornamental and tableware products. In 1871 Henry established a studio at the Lambeth pottery and offered work to designers and artists from a nearby Art school. Several of these designers have come to represent the best that Doulton had to offer. Names like the Barlow family (Florence, Hannah and Arthur), Frank Butler, Mark Marshall, Eliza Simmance and George Tinworth are commanding increasingly higher prices. It became Royal Doulton in 1901 after receiving a Royal Warrant from King Edward VII. The Lambeth pottery ceased production in 1956.

The stein is made of very unusual stoneware (Doulton's Silicon Ware) that simulates copper. Not only the copper-colored glaze, but also mock rivet heads, seams and screw thread on the top - every detail including faux "dents" were supposed to give an impression of a copper item. These quite remarkable simulated copper products were manufactured between 1887 and 1914. The majority of it was designed by Mary Goode. Based on the mark and the model number 9405 the bowl was produced around 1892. The bowl is in excellent flawless condition - a rare occurrence and collector's delight. It is 10" (24.5 cm) wide between the handles, 8.5" high.
