Early German Faience Beer Stein - Magdeburg c.1820s

Description: Antique German beer stein from early XIX century. Beautifully decorated with a picture of a gentleman in top hat - very traditional hand-painted beer drinking vessel made in late 1810s - 1820s. I attribute it to Magdeburg factory - the "M" on the bottom is very typical for Magdeburg pieces. Even though it was used by other factories as decorator's mark, in Magdeburg it could be consider as a factory mark. All the details and the style of decoration is consistent with Magdeburg. The lid is pewter with a scalloped thumblift that was used quite often in 1600s through early 1800s. The hinge is five ring closed type hinge.

The lid is engraved with a shovel and a barrel on a stick - the symbols of the beer brewing profession.

The stein is in a very good condition for the age - there is no chips or cracks, only some glaze crazing consistent with the age. The pewter is in excellent condition with no damage or repair. Overall this it is a rare condition for a faience piece that old. A wonderful piece that shows it's real age and beauty. The stein is quite large and impressive - it is 8" tall to the top of the thumblift. I guess it is about 1L capacity.
