Early German Glass Beer Stein - Cold Paint c.1800 - 1820 Description: This beautiful and very old beer stein was made of blown glass at the early 1800s - 1820s. The stein is decorated with floral motives very skilfully handpainted over clear glass. This type of decorations is called "cold paint" because the paints were not fired. The "cold paint" was mostly exclusive to Schrezheim faience factory - I have never heard of any cold-painted faience piece other than Schrezheim. The cold paint over glass is extremely rare. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that this stein was actually decorated at Schrezheim faience factory - the lid is very similar to what Schrezheim used for their faience pieces. And it's a fantastic very ornate heavy lid you only find on "late Biedermeier" from the period of 1800 - 1820s. The stein is very close to perfect condition - because of the nature of the cold paint it was worn-off very easily. I have seen steins of this kind where the paint was completely worn out with just a few tiny specks left. This one shows some wear but in fact the decorations are in a very good shape compare to the rest of this kind of ware. The inscription of front reads: "Zum Erinnerung" - "To the memories". It was probably a wedding gift - steins of this kind were very popular wedding gifts - in most cases one stein from a number of guests since they were very expensive at the old days. The stein has a foot ring also in perfect flawless condition. Please note - the stein is 100 original from the period! I guarantee my description and dating.
