Early German Westerwald Stoneware Beer Stein c.1750s Description: The beer steins made before 1800 are quite rare - at that time, before the industrial revolution, the production was all manual. Every stein made in the early period was unique, decorated by hand and rarely replicated. . Presented is an excellent quality saltglazed stoneware beer stein from around 1750s. The stoneware produced in Germany, especially in the Westerwald region was technologically superior to all the ceramics in the world at this time (except, probably, porcelain). The stein is decorated with insized floral decor and cobalt-blue glaze. Please note the the upper and lower bands of applied relief - the is the signs of early stoneware from before mid-1700. In late 1700 the applied stoneware decorations were completely abandoned as too labor extensive. The lid is pewter with scalloped thumblift - typical for the period of late 1600 to mid 1700s. There is a so-called "linen mark" on the inside of the lid (not shown on my pics) - and is due to a special technique of attaching lid to the tang - this technique was used until around 1860. As far as I know, none of the fake and reproduction stein has the linen mark - it is a good indication of authencity. The stein is in excellent shape - a very rare condition for a ceramics piece over 200 years old. There is no cracks, hairlines, chips or repairs to the body. There is also no damage or repairs to the pewter apart from a regular dings and scratches - normal wear.The lid is sitting pretty tight.
