German Stoneware Beer Stein Westerwald Horse d.1810

Description: Antique German beer stein from Westerwald area. made of saltglazed stoneware with cobalt-blue glaze - very traditional German technique that was in use for 300 years. Beautifully decorated with a picture of a horse etched into clay with a sharp instrument and glazed. This type of decoration is typical for 1700s - early 1800s. The stein is dated 1810 - this means it was made some time before this date - probably in late 1700s. Beer steins were very often engraved and dated long after they were made. The stein is quite large and impressive - it is 10" tall to the top of the thumblift. I guess it is over 1L capacity. The stein is in excellent untouched condition - a very rare thing for a piece that old.
