Large Porcelain Beer Stein/Ewer Bartmann c1860s

Description: Presented is a very large 14" tall pouring beer stein/ pitcher made around 1860s. It is made in form of a flat ewer decorated with blue glaze and showing a bearded man's face. This character (called Bartmann in Germany) has a long history in the tradition of beer steins. The oldest beer steins known - from 1500s often had a very similar character on a relief medallion. It was actually present in more or less the same form throughout the whole history of beer stein making. The stein is made of hard porcelain. I've a very similar stein made by KPM - the most famous porcelain factory in Germany. This one shows an impressed mark of "FM" - I was not able to identify it. The lid is pewter - the hinge is made this special way with 5-ring closed hinge, small hinge-stop and flat support that did not exist after after 1860s - this is the very early Historismus stein of 1860s. The stein is in excellent flawless condition. It is 14" tall, 3L capacity.
