Mettlach Jugendstil Beer Stein 2833c Loreley c.1908
Description:
This beer stein was made by Villeroy and Boch in Mettlach in 1908. It is a part of a series of 6 steins dedicated to popular German songs. It is called among collectors "The Brick Base Series" because of the unusual brick wall resembling base. The design of this stein is made in Jugendstil style - a German version of Art Nouveau very fashionable in this time period. I don't know who designed the series - it was not one of the usual Mettlach artists.
This stein is called "Loreley" - the etched picture shows us the Rhine or Rhein as it is called in Germany with this huge and most famous rock that was called Loreley and that was the cause of many shipwrecks on the river. The lid inlay shows a girl with a long hair - these were believed to be the mermaids that lured the seamen into the tragedy with their singing. These mermaids were also called Loreley. The inscription on the stein reads: "Ich weiß nicht, was soll es bedeuten" - "I know not what does it mean" - the first line of the most famous poem "Die Loreley" by Heinrich Heine. The poem became a very popular song.
The stein is in perfect flawless condition - a collector's dream! It is 7.5" tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.3L capacity.
