R.Merkelbach Jugendstil Beer Stein #2565 c.1910s
Description:
Presented is a very important beer drinking vessel manufactured by Reinhold Merkelbach. The firm of R. Merkelbach was the most modern in terms of design in the period of 1905 - 1910. The ceramic pieces from this peroid are the best examples of new esthetics that emerged to replace so-called Historismus style that was reigning for almost half a century. R. Merkebach employed the most famous and modern artists that worked in Jugendstil style - Richard Riemerschmid, Paul Wynand, K.Goerig and others. I don't know exactly who created the design for this stein but it carries the famous "Merkelbach look" of grey stoneware with the famous "Braun geflammt" and "Koelnisch braun" (Cologne brown) glazes that became the signature look of Merkelbach stoneware. Very interesting and unusual shape. The model number - 2565, however, indicate that the stein was made in late 1910s. The stein is in excellent flawless condition - very well preserved. Actually, the R.Merkelbach stoneware of the period employed new technologies creating very sturdy stoneware that rarely cracks - unlike Mettlach stoneware that usualy had some inside material tensions that produced hairlines over the time. The stein is 6" tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.5L capacity.
