Saltglazed Stoneware Antique Beer Stein Germania c.1880

Description: Interesting antique beer stein made around 1880s. Saltglazed stoneware with relief decorations and cobalt blue and magenta glaze. Nice ornate pewter lid. What's interesting about this stein is that the decoration motive is exactly the same as on Mettlach model #6. The front panel shows the allegorical figure of Germania holding a sword and a shield. The side panels shows Biblical Noah and a Lyre player. This is quite unusual - even though there were no copyright in 1880s, the potters tried not to steal motives and decorations from each other. The stein is in excellent flawless condition. It is 6" tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.3 L capacity.
