Paper for illustrations is a thick coated with color lithographs. Also additional numerous black and white drawings including the first known book illustration of Jessie Wilcox Smith*. This illustration is 5 maidens in a row. In addition there are 20 full page color illustrations by Ida Waugh and 21 full page black and white illustrations by various artists.
The cover shows some wear along spine and corners. The page titles list of engravings has a small rip, you can see on some pages the binding threads but they are not loose or torn. Owners address label on inside front cover and inside back cover.
A delight to the eye, there is a feature that makes this book important. On a preliminary page appears a black & white drawing of five little maids, with poem done by Jessie Wilcox Smith. This was her first published appearance in book form. * ill. First appeared in St. Nicholas magazine 1888.
