Great history of the Rancho period in California. The Rancho San Luis Gonzaga until the death of the last heir was the only Rancho still in the hands of the original family who proved the grant. At one time running across the top of the coast range it 440,000 acres were reduced to 4500 at the time of this heir's death. The rancho was left to the State of California with the proviso that it never be developed and that it become a park for the people of the state. Millions drive by each year on their way to or from the coast to the central valley. Great California History, Merced County History with a great index and notes.
