Artist Bio:
Doyle Wheeler Ammo-Head design Doyle
Wheeler was born in Anchorage, Alaska in 1976 and raised in Spokane,
Washington. He spent his school years
there and found a passion for repairing damaged cars. He excelled with a career in heavy collision
repair and continued in that profession for 15 years. Along the way he gained skills in metal forming
and fabrication, welding, and technical paint finishes. He realized that a car or truck is not only
the second largest investment in a person’s life, but it is also a reflection
of who they are, while also being there mobility. He found a rewarding livelihood
by using his creativity as a precision craftsman. In 2001 he
was inspired again by his friends to pursue his dream of hunting. In 2003 Doyle received a lathe and a few
turning tools that had been handed down through the family. Doyle then found ways to turn some of the wood
he found in the outdoors into simple writing pens on his lathe. He continued crafting on the lathe as a hobby.
In the summer
of 2007 Doyle was hit by a moving vehicle while walking in a parking garage and
it changed his life forever. While
under medical care he was ordered to do nothing except, sleep and eat for a few
weeks while being documented medically and finding a way to repair the effects
of the impact from the accident. Doyle’s
wife and support Carri,
was eager to help keep him occupied.
Doyle found inspiration in the magazines and books she brought
home. In this time Doyle read a lot
about some of his favorite things, shooting, hunting, pen making and home
handyman projects. In about four weeks a
treatment plan was in order which kept Doyle from his career and
activities. The doctor encouraged him to
find something to do that will not affect his restrictions that were ordered. Though there
were physical restrictions none were made for his mind. He came up with an idea he wanted to
try. Doyle created his first writing pen
from a spent .30-06 shell casing and a .30 caliber bullet. The top was deer antler from his stash and
the bottom of the pen a rifle shell casing with a bullet nib he created. After making a few for close friends and
family to have fun with, the feedback from them was overwhelming. Doyle knew
that he found a talent he could share with others. A close
friend and retired gun dealer helped Doyle acquire a large selection of brass
that needed to be used as it was on the way out. In 2008
Doyle created a name for himself as Ammo-Head design. It is no surprise the
influence of Doyle’s extensive career as a precision craftsman in the automotive collision industry
is expressed in his passion for creating precision writing instruments, knives,
and skull art. With a natural
appreciation for unique materials found from items that people take for granted
or find normal and make them useful and reusable. Whether it is from a reclaimed wine barrel, ammunition,
antlers, rare exotic timbers and acrylics his creations truly are one of a
kind. Doyle is a rising artist with his
works in two art galleries in his area.
He has been featured in a hunting magazine for a matching set of bullet
writing pens commissioned by a staff writer, and was challenged by an author to
create a fountain pen to add to his collection.
Doyle’s Ammo-Head design
creations will forever appeal to anyone who employs his useful artwork. |
