Being offered for sale is this Gorgeous Classic American Empire Crotch Mahogany Sofa circa 1850's. This beautiful 19th century sofa features fabulous carvings on the serpentine crest-rail that accent the oval framed padded area at the center, out-ward scroll arms, a wide crotch mahogany seat-rail with applied scroll carvings at the center and bracket styled front legs. The beautiful cranberry damask fabric appears to have been recently applied and is in excellent condition. The carvings at the back and below the seat area are a lighter shade of mahogany and offer a beautiful contrast of color to the darker mahogany wood which gives this sofa a stunning presence!
This sofa measures 37 1/2 inches in height from the floor to the top of the center back,total length arm to arm measures 72 1/2 inches, seat width measures 57 1/2 inches, seat depth is 19 inches and seat height from the floor to the top of the seat measures 15 inches and this sofa weighs approximately 85 lbs.
This sofa has a grand and regal presence and is very solid and tight. There is a piece of the carving missing on the left side of the back that appears to have been missing for some time, and two small veneer chips on the back crest-rail edge which I have shown a close-up picture of... very common in pieces of this age and definitely nothing that distracts from the beauty of this sofa in my opinion, but there.
