Description: It is an original engraved Pre-Civil War era antique map in great shape with vibrant handcoloring and the classic Colton border. It is from an 1856 Colton's Atlas of the World, published in New York by the Colton Company, 1856, although there is a copyright date of 1855 printed on the map states as "Entered according to Act of Congress in the Year 1855 by J.H. Colton in the Clerks Office of the District Court of the United States..." Colton's name also appears under the title block. Colton would sell his business to Johnson around 1860 and many of these plates would be modified and reprinted in the Johnson Atlas.
Size: The map image measures approximately 12 1/2 by 15 1/2 inches on a 14 1/2 by 17" page with a margin all around for framing as seen in the pic.
Condition: The map is in Fair to Good condition with overall tonal aging and original hand coloring. The edges have been trimmed and at some point the edges on the reverse were reinforced with acid free tape to stabilize the edge tears. The image area is actually very clean with nice color and it would be a good map for framing. The pics are of the actual map. Priced to Sell due to the defects.
