Description: It is an authentic Antique Map: Not a modern reproduction!" It is a steel plate engraved map with original handcoloring and the banknote border, the most sought after of all the Mitchell Maps. It is from Mitchell's New Universal Atlas, published by Thomas Cowperthwait & Co., 1851 edition. It has a copyright date of 1850 printed on the map along with Thomas Cowperthwait's name. August Mitchell was the primary mapmaker of the company while Cowperthwait was involved in the publishing aspect. Mitchell later bought the rights to the Atlas and published it himself after 1860. A copy of the title page is included. It is an interesting map showing the main transportation lines of the period with statistical table of the population of Massachusetts and Rhode Island counties and an inset of a plan of Boston.
Size: The map image measures approximately 11 1/2 by 15 inches on a 12 1/2 by 16" page.
Condition: The map is in Good or better condition for its age with overall light tonal aging and original handcoloring as issued, basically as seen in the pics. The right and bottom margin has been cropped and a few very light brown spots as can be seen in the pic, nothing distracting. Overall, clean in general with a nice anttique quality that would frame up nicely. basically as seen in the pics. The pic is of the actual map you are bidding.
