The listing is for an authentic woodcut map of Switzerland area of Lacus Lemanus or modern day Lake Geneva. The orientation of the map is in reverse of today's maps with North oriented to the bottom rather than the top, which also reverses the map from left to right as typical of the these early maps.
Description: It is an authentic woodcut antique map approximately 450 years old, originally published in Sebastian Munster's Cosmographia, one of the first encyclopedia style works attempting to put the geography, history and cultures of the world in perspective. Munster's Cosmographia was first published in 1544 and continued to be published throughout the century, this one came to us with a circa date of 1550. It is a leaf from a book so there is text on the reverse as well. It is in Latin. It is not matted nor framed being sold as a single sheet with a centerfold as shown in the main pic.
Size: The map image measures approximately 3 1/2 by 5 1/4 inches (9x13cm) on a page measuring 8 by 12 1/2 inches (20x32cm).
Condition: The map is in Very Good condition, with text on the reverse, printed on quality cotton paper of the period with the typical striation when held to the light. The actual map looks much better with a lighter background than shown in the pic. There is only minor wear around the edges otherwise it is very clean with a nice quality antique appearance that would frame up nicely. The pics are of the actual map.
