Description: It is an authentic copper engraved antique map over 385 years old. It is by Pieter Verbist (also Verbiest), 1607-1669. His name Petri Verbiest Exce. 1624 appears in the bottom left cartouche. It is a classic Dutch map from the Golden Age of Cartography, a period that flourished in Holland during the 1600s, which some would argue was the high point in the history of mapmaking when art and design was merged with the curiosity of a new vision of the globe as the Dutch West and East Indies Companies sailed the oceans, stimulating much curiosity in the Netherlands and elsewhere for new found lands and geography. It is oriented with West at the top, typical of the period. It is not matted nor framed being sold as a single double sheet with a centerfold as shown in the main pic. It is a very rare map, Verbist was not nearly as prolific as Blaeu and others of the period, although his map were very accurate and much sought after by collectors.
Size: The entire page measures approximately 15 1/2 by 21 on a 19 1/2 by 22 1/2 page
Condition: The map is in Fair to Good condition for its age with tonal aging and original hand color with a centerfold as issued. It is basically as seen in the pics. There is some dampstaining around the edges, edge tears. The paper along the right edge about 1 inch slightly into the map appears to have attached at the time of printing to enlarge the page and has a slight separation along the top margin and some abrasion in a couple of place were the edge meets. Otherwise, the map image is very nice and bright with strong superb original color from the period and would frame up very well. The pics are of the actual map.
