Title: Saxoniae Superioris Lusatiae Misniaque descripto
Description: It is an authentic 17th century copper engraved antique map with original antique handcoloring designed by Gerard Mercator (1512-1594) and published by Henricus Hondius (1597-1651). Jodocus Hondius (1563-1612), the elder, had collaborated and learned mapmaking from Mercator and after his death, Hondius bought the plates in 1604 and added others to begin the Mercator Hondius Atlas, which would continue to be enlarged until 1641 by his son Henricus Hondius, who took over in 1612. Jansson married his sister Elizabeth Hondius and became a partner in 1633. This map was published sometime between 1627 and 1633 prior to the partnership with Jansson and bears two inscriptions. In the bottom left corner is the inscription "Per Gerardum Mercatorem cum privilegio" and in the bottom right is the inscription "Amstelodami, Execu- sum apud Henricum Hondium sub insigno Atlantis, 1627." The map is being sold unframed as seen in the first pic. It is a rare map with nice detail of the era showing Leipzig, Dresden, Meissen and many other towns.
Size: The map image measures approximately 13 1/2 by 19 inches on a 16 by 20 1/2" page with a margin all around for matting as seen in the pic.
Condition: The map is in Fair condition for its age with overall tonal ageing as seen. At a later date the map was backed with another sheet and the margins slightly trimmed for a collector's personal atlas. In general there is some edgewear with the backing sheet showing through around the edges and in a few spots of paper loss as can be seen on the pics. There is light backprinting, plate residue, smudges, light creases along the centerfold as seen in the pic. We have provided plenty of good close up pics so you can see the actual condition very well. Overall, it has a rich antique patina as often desired.
