Title: Principatus Anhaldinus et Magdeburgensis Archiepiscopatus
Description: It is an authentic 17th century copper engraved antique map with original antique handcoloring designed by Henricus Hondius (1597-1651). This map was published circa 1630 prior to the partnership with his brother-in-law Janssonius, since it only bears Hondius inscription in the bottom left corner: "Amstelodami, Henrici Hondy." Jodocus Hondius, the elder, bought the Mercator plates in 1604 and new maps were continuously added thereafter. Henricus took over after his father's death in 1612 continuing to add maps and publish various versions of the Mercator Hondius Atlas upto 1641, as well as single maps. After 1633, Jansonnius' name began to appear more frequently in the place of Hondius. The maps and atlases were very popular at the time, published in various languages, including Latin as in this case, making it very difficult to put an exact date on loose maps. The The map is being sold unframed as seen in the first pic. It is a rare map with a nice cartouche and lots of detail for the era.
Size: The map image measures approximately 15 by 19 inches on a 16 by 20 1/2" page with a margin all around for matting as seen in the pic.
Condition: The map is in Good condition for its age with overall tonal ageing as seen. At a later date the map was backed with another sheet and the margins slightly trimmed for a collector's personal atlas. There is a spot in the upper right margin, some general browning and the usual plate residue as seen in the pic. Otherwise, it has a nice rich antique appearance as desired with original hand coloring and no obvious distracting defects, great for framing. We have provided plenty of good close up pics so you can see the actual condition very well.
