Title: Regnorum Hispania nova descriptio
Description: It is an authentic 17th century copper engraved antique map over 350 years old, French text on the reverse with a centerfold as issued. It was published in Willem Blaeu's Theatrum orbis terranrum, sive, Novus Atlas, first published in two volumes in Amsterdam, 1635. Willem Janzoon Blaeu (1571-1638), perhaps the best known of the great 17th century Dutch mapmakers, who in 1633 became the official cartographer for the Dutch East India Company. Although his name is best known as Willem Blaeu, it was usually stated as on the Novus Atlas maps as Guilielmi Blaeuw, found in the bottom center of the map stating "Amstelodami, Exc. Guilielmi Blaeuw." The map is being sold unframed as seen in the first pic. It is a rare map with nice cartouches and lots of detail for the era.
Size: The map image measures approximately 15 by 19 1/2 inches on a 16 by 20 1/2" page with a margin all around for matting as seen in the pic.
Condition: The map is in Fair condition for its age with overall tonal aging, basically as seen in the pics, binding tab still attached to the reverse side. Most of the original color has faded and there is some paper loss on the edge, and one half inch diameter of loss on the map in the upper left corner above Gallecia as can be seen in the pics, it could easily be repaired with some of the paper from the margin. We made a couple of minor repairs with Japanese paper to prevent further damage of short tears on the left side only visible on the reverse, separation at the end of the fold in the top margin. Despite the paper loss the map is still very pliable and flexible, printed on the high cotton paper of the period. A good candidate for restoring the color. Overall, the map image is fairly clean and would frame up nicely.
