Description: The entire plate is dedicated to the construction and transportation of Pontoon Bridges, which were used by troops to cross rivers. They were basically made by placing canvas boats side by side and then laying planks for the troops and wagons to transverse. The plate is very instructive on how to construct them. There is also one diagram of Rifle Projectiles used by the Rebels in the Virginia Campaign of 1864. It is an original uncut lithograph sheet of Sepia tinted photos taken during the war. These are often framed separately, but being offered here as a complete sheet. It is from the Atlas to Accompany the Official Recors of the Union and Confederate Armies, published by the Secretary of War, (Washington: Government Printing Office, 1891-1895). The atlas title appears in the top left margin and plate number in the upper right. A copy of the title page is included with all the details for authenticity. The atlas was published in a very limited context to be distributed to government officials in the three houses of government. The atlas was used as a reference for governemental study in assessing the Civil War. This is from the original first publishing, that lasted from 1891-5. A very beautiful print that will frame up nicely!
Size: The page measures 18 by 29 inches with plenty of margin all around for framing.
Condition: The map is in Good to Very Good condition, blank on the reverse with a centerfold as issued. There are some light smudges at the ends of the centerfold and some edgewear with a couple of short repaired edgetears, otherwise it is very clean. The print has been cleaned so it is a little brighter than usual. The pics are of the actual print.
