FLAVOR OF GREEN TEA OVER RICE (1952)

Description:
Ochazuke no aji - One of those films
whose simplicity transforms an ordinary story into something
special.
About an upper-middle-class marriage, one that was arranged
the old-fashioned way and is now falling gently apart as the childless couple
approach middle age. Takeo, a capricious wife from Tokyo high-society is bored
by her dull husband Mokichi, a quiet and reliable company executive raised in
the country.
She gives every indication of being a rather mean-spirited
snob. She makes up lame lies to steal away with her friends to a hot spring
resort, where she publicly dismisses him as "Mr Insensitive". However, he gives
every indication of being as thickheaded and boring as she says he is.
She treats him with increasing disrespect and nearly has an
affair, but something changes her attitude and she returns to him with an
appreciation for his simplicity and reliability. The surprise of the film is not that they are eventually
reconciled, but that they become such appealing characters, touched by a kind of
nobility.
