This historical epic is one of Director Shohei Imamura's most ambitious projects and re-creates the carnivalesque sights and sounds of 19th-century Edo.
The story takes place during the time just before the Meiji Restoration, with the grip of Shoguns going into decline, and foreign powers already afoot on the land of the rising sun, and tells of a peasant riot conspired by the various political factions of the time.
The film depicts the many facets of the corruption and power-play between various Warlords, all of them scheming and plotting against each other to gain a foothold of fame and fortune, but as the title translates, echoing the rioters' cries, "What the hell!"
