Kosetsu Hyaku Monogatari - In an age where the existence of monsters was feared, an aspiring writer travels with a secretive gang, hired to solve cases that are buried in darkness.
The scene is set in the Bakumatsu age, when the foundations of the Tokugawa government have begun to sway. In this age where "Darknesss" breathed and the existence of monsters was feared; an aspiring writer wanders the country compiling anecdotes about supernatural monsters of one kind or another into what he hopes will be his masterwork the "Hyaku Monogatari".
Along the way his curiosity for a good story leads him to three low-life's, Mataichi, the Monk of Deception; Ogin, Mistress of the Puppets; and the smelly pee-man Chouji, a secretive gang who exploit other people's superstitions to mete out justice.
The plot involves a notorious murderer who allegedly was executed three times prior but has come back each time as a ghost to haunt others, although that may be all a set-up in order to exploit the superstitions of others as part of a larger cover-up.
