Tokaido obake dochu – aka Along with Ghosts is the third in the series.
A young girl named Miyo happens upon a document that incriminates local Yakuza Boss Kanzo. When Boss Kanzo discovers that she has this document, he sends his thugs after her. Unfortunately, these henchmen end up murdering Miyo's grandfather on sacred ground, releasing the Yokai (Spirit Monsters). When Kanzo succeeds in kidnapping Miyo and using her for leverage against her long lost father, it is up to the Yokai to determine whether she will be reunited with her father or suffer at the hands of Kanzo.
It's a story of murder, vengeance, and redemption, but with ghosts. The film is more reminiscence of a Zatoichi movie, and not surprisingly. One of the two directors, Kimiyoshi Yasuda, directed some of that series.
Yokai are Japan's traditional creepy-crawlies. Almost always encountered in the dark of night, they were once feared throughout the land.
