"Botan Doro" has been the subject of some 18 film adaptations, this one being the first of the "modern" period. It entered Japanese culture in the 1600s and became one of that country's most loved Kaidan, fusing romance, sexual politics and terror into an emotionally potent drama.
Shinzaburo has been plagued by a recurring nightmare for so long that he begins to think that it may be real. In his dreams he sees a lonely young woman commit suicide, then vanish in a rain of blood. As the line between his dreams and reality begin to blur, Shinzaburo becomes convinced that this woman's ghost is somehow following him, looking for revenge against those who wronged her.
