aka: In a Ring of Mountains - Based on a novel by Shin Hasegawa. This ninkyo eiga or chivalrous gambler film takes place in the mountains near Edo during the Samurai Era.
Kiba-no-Masakichi (Masa), a traveling gambler takes on a lumber worker job and falls in love with Oshima almost at first sight. When a corrupt magistrate rapes Oshima, Masa avenges her by killing the officer.
Haunted & grief-stricken by the fact that Oshima has committed suicide he goes underground, hiding in the gambling world. When he winds up helping a young couple in trouble, his past comes to haunt him, pursued by the law, he's finally cornered for a climactic one-against-all battle.
